Caitlin Palacio 2009 National Champion
YPSILANTI, Mich. - The 2009 USA Youth Track & Field Championships completed its firsy day of competition Tuesday at Rynearson Stadium on the campus of Eastern Michigan University with Steeplechase and race walking events highlighting the day. As Fans, Family and Friends attended the races they were treated to an afternoon packed full of action and excitement.

A fan favorite, Caitlin Palacio, 2-time defending Junior Olympic champion of LSI Sprint took home first place in the 1,500m race walk in the Midget Girl's division. This race was the first of a series of 1500 meter racewalkson the day and Caitlin turned in a superb 8:27.00 to lead the field, giving LSI its 2nd National title of the day. Now 3 times champion with obvious talent, Caitlin walks faster in distance events than many kids her age could dream of running.

LSI's first National title of the day would come from reigning champion Lila Haba. Making her Youth National debut in the 3000m race walk , The 3000m race walking specialist and 2008 Junior Olympic Gold medalist would improved her personal best by over a minute crossing the tape with a comfortable win in 16:09.39 . With another championship title under her belt it seems only natural to say that she is the best at what she does.

In the past fews years these girls have brought a lot to the forefront with race walking. An event that is fast becoming one of the more popular events to hit the scene and with the help of the Pacific Association's Becky klein and Coach Gabe Palacio they look forward to introducing more athletes into the event.

Though over the years more glamour events like the sprints have dominated the track & field audience. It seems race walking has been a way of introducing young and old alike to the sport.

It also worth mentioning that both girls have twice made The National Race Walking Honor Roll for their outstanding performances in national competitions. An honor not easily given by the National Race Walk Committee.

So on behalf of LSI and Family Congratulations on a Job Well Done! U Go Girls!
