Katie Nelms at the Helm!
Ranked CCS #1 300LH - 42.65

With many of the highest profile meets now in the past, this week will be big on the Track. The 2009 CCS Division Outdoor Track & Field Championships will take place in Gilroy, California on Friday, May 29 and LSI will have one of its own at the helm! LSI standout and Leland Junior Katie Nelms will make her debut to state in four events. What can't she do? That's the question everyone is asking. Arguably the most vertile female athlete in the CCS she will journey the road to state competing in the 100 meters, 100LH, 300LH and 4x400 relay.

If there is any events that will have many new faces, it's the 100 meters and 100 meter Hurdles. Although the speed of Jeneba Tarmoh, Krystal Carter and Vasthi Thomas will be missed, That doesn't mean, however, that there isn't still plenty of speed to be showcased in the CCS.

Enter Leland Junior and LSI Veteran Katie Nelms who is poised to have a solid shot at winning the 100 (11.85) and 100 Hurdles (14.09), 300 Hurdles (42.65) and the 4x400 Relay (3:59). Katie enters the 2009 CCS Finals as the top-ranked athlete in four of five events and only second in the 200 Meters by .25 tenths of a second.

Angela Gradiska of Pinewood also put down some fast times this season and is the only one who could give Katie a run for her money. With Katie and Angela, the only two athletes to clock under 12 seconds this season (under any conditions) the clash of titans will be in the Finals when these two matchup. But its Katie who appears to be the one to watch this season. With her explosive speed out of the blocks and willing to fight to the wire, Katie could rack up plenty of points for the Chargers.

The defending champion at 300 meters katie holds the Fourth fastest time in the state over 8 sticks. A season best of 42.65 gives her a comfortable lead to State where she hopes to have a few surprises waiting for her competitiors.

Ranked CCS #1 100 Meters - 11.85

The 100 meter hurdles will return plenty of talent from last season, including Katie who clocked 14.09 seconds so far this season. After a successful dual campaign, Katie looks to wrap up another title for the Chargers. But who are some of the athletes who will challenge Katie this season? Look no further than on the campus of Valley Christan where Hannah Goranson boast the second fastest time this season. With a few stripes already on her belt Hannah will try to upset the division leader. For Goranson however; experience will be her biggest foe, where Katie will have plenty.

Katie will be in the drivers seat to make her case as the most talented female athlete to ever grace the high school scene in quite a while and LSI will be there to cheer her own.

So to our Golden Girl... Good Luck from your Family at LSI
