Katie Nelms - Stanford Invitational

Palo Alto - It was a busy weekend for high school and collegiate athletes at the Stanford Invitational, as they gather at Cobb Track and Angell Field. The competition which began Friday got underway with events lasting from March 27-28 . The Invitational is the largest premiere of the Track Season for both high school and collegiate athletes in and around California.

California Sectional Championships meets are a couple month aways, and this weekend’s races gave a good indication of the level of competition in the upcoming weeks leading to the championships.

In the girls 400 meter Hurdles the usual suspects of Katie Nelms and Kori Catrter lead the way going one, two in the event. As the only two competitors to have ran the World Youth Championship qualfying marks for the hurdles at 400 meter. They showed why they are the easy favorites to represent california. Both girls looked strong and relaxed during the entire one-lap affair.

"Technically is a was a very good race for Katie, "said Coach Hill". "She went out and executed well given the circumstance that this was her very first race out that far. Speed which we needed early has been the focus of attention so were satified with what has developed. Stride patterning has been the focus outside of the obvious developement and the fact that she caught rhythm in the early part of the race brings some satisfaction."

Katie would later compete in both the 100 meters (12.24q) and 100 meter hurdle prelims (14.48q) to earn her way into the final rounds. Pulling out at the last minute she decided to save her energy for the efforts needed later in the week.

In the 100 meter hurdle finals it would be friend and foe Kori Carter to take the victory. Over all the meet was a balance of fun and excitement. With many more action-packed meets schedule these athletes will have their hands full as they sets their eyes on the prize at the California State Championships.
